Greenfield company opens Michigan laser applications lab

Greenfield-based automated laser technology company Photon Automation Inc. has opened a new laser applications laboratory in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The company said Tuesday the facility will serve as a state-of-the-art hub for research, development and testing of laser applications.

Photon Automation specializes in automated industrial laser solutions, particularly laser welding, cutting, cleaning and marking applications.

A spokesperson for the company told IIB a total of $500,000 was invested in the 7,400-square-foot facility, which will initially employ three people, with up to seven more being added after the first year.

Photon Automation said the facility will offer a variety of services for different industries, including laser applications testing, prototype manufacturing and testing, laser job shop services, and laser education.

The lab is being led by laser physicist Dr. Najah George, who began his career with lasers in 1987 at the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission/Laser Development. He most recently served as director of research and development at Our Next Energy in Novi, Michigan.

“Dr. George’s wealth of experience and international recognition as a laser expert will undoubtedly enhance our capabilities and allow us to better serve our clients across multiple industries,” Photon Automation CEO William Huffman said in a news release.

The company said the Farmington Hills lab’s proximity to major industrial hubs, including laser manufacturers, will facilitate collaboration with industry partners.

Photon Automation, founded in 2000, employs 65 people at its facility in Greenfield.
